July skin rituals: From hedgerow to beach

Summer has landed, July is here with an epic heatwave and we're all spending more time outdoors. Long evenings in the garden, salty skin, sea swimming, festivals, camping trips, family visits, beach bags by the door, sand everywhere and bare feet whenever we can get away with it.

More sunshine, more heat, more wind, more sea, more late nights, more dancing and more time spent outdoors. Summer can leave your skin feeling different, especially when life is full and we are outside more. It can feel drier, more delicate, less bouncy or just a little unsettled by heat, wind, sea air and long days.

This is the season for simple, nourishing rituals. The kind that help your skin feel fresh, resilient and glowing, without asking too much of you. Keep things easy enough that you will actually do them, even when you are tired, sandy or sleeping on a roll mat.

This month I’m reaching for…

Your skin is asking for more nourishment, more comfort and a little bit more care. VerdeKin is made in small batches here in Devon, with beautiful British botanical oils, butters and plant extracts chosen to soften, support and help skin feel cared for, exactly as it is.

skincare gift

For skin that wants nourishing hydration, the Hibiscus & Mallow Cleansing Melt is a beautiful multitasker. Use it as a balm cleanser, a softening mask or an overnight treatment. Hibiscus is naturally rich in vitamin C and gentle AHAs, while mallow brings that gorgeous plant soothing and softening feeling. My hibiscus is in powder form, so when you mix it with water, it activates beautifully. The water helps release the hibiscus’ natural acids and antioxidant-rich plant compounds, and it feels so luxurious on your skin.

skincare gift

If your skin feels dry, tight, sun-tired or windblown, the Wild Rose & Sea Buckthorn Beauty Balm is just the thing! Rich, waterless and concentrated, made with rosehip, sea buckthorn, blackcurrant, jojoba and shea butter to soften, nourish and support the skin barrier. It can be used as a cleanser, pressed into dry areas as a rich moisturising balm, or used as an overnight treatment when skin feels like it needs more. A tiny pot of calm for cheeks, lips, hands, elbows and all those little places summer seems to dry out.

*A note on natural balms in warm weather: if your balm has gone soft, please do not worry. Natural balms can melt in high heat, especially those made with beautiful butters like shea. If this happens, keep it somewhere cool or pop it in the fridge.

If you're visiting Devon this summer...

If you are visiting South Devon this summer, one of our favourite simple rituals is a swim at Slapton Sands. It is a beautiful stretch of shingle beach, with endless horizon views and clear water. For a relaxed walk before or after, follow the South West Coast Path along Slapton Sands, with the sea on one side and Slapton Ley on the other. It is a wonderful place to slow down, notice what is growing, breathe in the salt air and come back to yourself a little.

With warmth, Polly
